The Allen Era

Captain James Allen established Fort Des Moines with around 200 residents

upon his death, he left a large inheritance to his nephew B.F. Allen of ~$15,000 (~$500,000 in today's money) 

at 19, B.F. Allen moved to Fort Des Moines as a merchant

started a steam sawmill and a general store

purchased a steamboat in St. Louis

married Arathusa West

began a career as a banker and real estate operator (at his height, it is estimated that he owned at least 93 square miles of Iowa land, ~60,000 acres)

became one of the directors of the State Bank of Iowa

took controlling interest in the Bank of Nebraska

helped keep local businesses operational through guaranteeing debts

Des Moines had around 4,000 people

became one of Iowa's first millionaires

elected to Des Moines City Council

organized the Rock Island Railroad

organized Des Moines' first Gas Company

organized the Des Moines Coal Company

with E.J. Ingersoll, organized Hawkeye Insurance Company

construction began on Terrace Hill

the Rock Island railroad reached Des Moines

became one of the directors and a major stockholder of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad

used railroad trust funds to buy up property along the proposed route west to the Missouri River, plotted town sites and stations, sold them at a large profit

Terrace Hill opened to a housewarming party of 700 guests, ~$8,000 was spent on food/flowers/ entertainment (~$150,000 in today's money). The meal included oysters, turkey, 25-pound cakes, and an ice sculpture of George Washington. Two pianists and singers provided musical entertainment.

elected to Iowa State Senate

helped organize Des Moines Water Company, and became it's first president

the Iowa legislature began constructing the Iowa Capitol Building

purchased controlling interest in the Cook County National Bank in Chicago and was elected its president

Arathusa Allen died

Cook County National Bank crashed

Allen went bankrupt

sold Terrace Hill to F.M. Hubbell for $60,000 (~$1,500,000 in today's dollars), or about 1/4 the cost of the property 15 years earlier.
